The Scopes Trial – Creation versus Evolution
The Scopes Trial, was an American legal case from July 10 to July 21, 1925, in which a high school teacher, John T. Scopes, was accused of violating Tennessee’s Butler Act, which had made it unlawful to teach human evolution in any state-funded school. The trial publicized the Fundamentalist–Modernist controversy, which set Modernists, who said evolution was not inconsistent with religion, against Fundamentalists, who said the Word of God as revealed in the Bible took priority over all human knowledge. Scopes Trial It may come across as farcical, but the idea of religion usurping science isn’t new. While this was handled as a court case, Galileo stood before the Inquisition for stating the Earth revolved around the Sun. Church doctrine stated the Earth was the center of universe, so contradictory evidence was seen as heresy.
