Seven Deadly Sins

We’re told to avoid and be afraid of the Seven Deadly Sins, but I disagree. These “sins” are necessary and even beneficial. They should be sought out rather than avoided. When used correctly, they can make us a better person. Like everything, they only become problematic when used to excess.

As a reminder, we have: Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy, Pride

All of these are motivating factors in life and relationships.

Lust is another word for attraction and desire. Lust can motivate us to find a partner. Lust combined with Pride make us take care of ourselves and look enticing to our partners. Lust stops us from wearing torn sweatpants and pizza stained shirts. You have to ask, which comes first, Lust or Love? And can you really have one without the other?

Gluttony makes us savor food and drink. Gluttony motivates us to try foods from around the world not just frank and beans or bread and curd. Gluttony led to food refrigeration and preservation. Without Gluttony, we wouldn’t have the granary. And at this time of year, Thanksgiving is a nationally recognized day of Gluttony.

Greed and envy make us work harder for the things we want in life. Greed and Pride make us earn more so we can send our kids to better schools and universities. Greed pushes us to buy things of quality rather than complete shit. Greed gives us the motivation to advance our careers, and make companies properous. Greed encourages us to do more and better tomorrow than we did today.

Sloth comes every Sunday as people sit on the couch and watch sports. It’s written that Sunday is supposed to be a day of rest. Further, Sloth isn’t a bad thing. People need a break, which is why we now have Mental Health days. We now realize burnout is real thing.

Wrath is a motivator to perform beyond expectation. It’s drives us to break down misconceptions. It pushes us to excel and prove others are wrong. It challenges established ideas. Wrath can be used to turn the tables and lift us from stereotypes.

Envy motivates us to work hard. Envy motivates us to better ourselves. Wanting a new car that always starts is envy. Wanting a bigger house with a media room is Envy. Wanting to live in neighborhood with excellent schools is Envy. Wanting to rise above out current position in life is Envy.

Pride makes us dress appropriately. Pride makes us take a shower in the morning. Pride makes us work out to undo Gluttony. Wearing a business suit to Church is Pride. Wearing a suit to court is Pride. Anything other than wearing a sack is Pride. Competition is another form of Pride. Having respect for yourself is Pride.

These are powerful motivators for self-improvement. They are nothing to be ashamed of, and when use to your advantage will make you a happier, healthier and more successful person.
